What Is Crypto Market Cap?
Crypto market capitalization is an estimate of a circulating asset's total market value. It is useful for comparing relative size, but it is often misread as the amount of cash invested in a cryptocurrency or the amount that could be withdrawn from it.
The market-cap formula
Market cap equals the current price per unit multiplied by circulating supply. Both inputs can change, so market cap changes whenever price or the reported circulating supply changes.
What market cap can tell you
Market cap provides a common scale for assets with very different unit prices and supplies. A token priced at one cent can have a larger market cap than a token priced at thousands of dollars if far more units circulate.
Rankings based on market cap can help describe relative size at a point in time. They do not measure network quality, revenue, decentralization, security, or the probability of future returns.
Why it is not money invested
Market cap applies the latest market price to every circulating unit. Most units did not trade at that price, so the result is not a running total of investor deposits.
It is also not an estimate of how much cash holders could collectively receive. Selling pressure can move through the available order book and lower the price, particularly in a thin market. Liquidity and trading volume need to be evaluated separately.
Supply data matters
Circulating-supply estimates can differ across data providers because tokens may be locked, burned, bridged, held by a foundation, or subject to unclear release conditions. An inaccurate supply figure produces an inaccurate market cap.
For assets with future issuance or unlocks, fully diluted valuation offers another perspective. It uses a broader supply assumption, but that does not make it a prediction of future value.
Using the metric responsibly
Use market cap as one comparative metric rather than a complete valuation model.
- Compare assets using consistent supply definitions and data timestamps.
- Check liquidity and volume before assuming a quoted price applies to a large transaction.
- Review issuance, unlock schedules, and concentration alongside circulating market cap.
- Treat dramatic target-price calculations as scenarios, not forecasts.
Key takeaway
Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply. It is valuable for scale and comparison, but it does not show cash invested, available liquidity, or whether an asset is fairly valued.
